The Manix 2 XL

Crafted for Life

The Manix 2 XL is an oversized version of the Manix 2 with a blade that is just under four-inches. The blade is locked open using Spyderco's patented Ball Bearing Lock. When opened, the ball bearing moves forward onto the blade's ramp where it is wedged, locking the blade safely open. The blade is CPM S30V, ground full-flat and features jimping above the oversized 14mm Spyderco Round Hole. The liners inside the G-10 handle extend beyond the scales, creating a scalloped pattern around the handle's perimeter for additional grip. This feature keeps the knife from slipping out in the hand and works well with gloves. The liners serve a double purpose by adding rigidity and lightweight strength to the handle. A three-screw clip can be positioned ambidextrously, tip-up for comfort and pocket carry. The knife also has a large lanyard pipe to protect various types of cords or thongs.

Meets all reasonable expectations

Meets all reasonable expectations
(This review is not small, but neither is the price of the knife. If you want my overall impression, skip to the last paragraph)This is my first Spyderco knife, and, it's everything I expected it to be. Given that this cost me more than twice as much as I'd ever previously spent on a knife, that's a bit of an accomplishment. To be entirely honest, I regretted the purchase shortly after I placed the order, and was ready to find a fault with it so I could return it and have the money back - but I like it far too much. I'll eat eggs for a few weeks. Worth it.This is a big knife. Yeah, "XL" kinda gives that away, but even looking at the measurements and being given rough size estimates doesn't quite tell the whole story. I've submitted pictures (with some annotations) that should help.Ergonomics:Herein lies my biggest complaint: The handle's jimping. It's a little uncomfortable. My ring finger gets the worst of it, but it's really not too bad. It might start to make your hands a little raw after extended use. It will not, however, slip out of your hand....Ever.The handle is very well formed, whether held in a standard or reverse grip. Even the pocket clip helps fill the hand and give extra purchase on the knife. No real complaints, but (perhaps notably) no praises.Portability:It's a little hefty, but the weight is evenly distributed. Given how large the knife is, the weight is admirably low. It sits in the pocket very well, and takes up much less space than my previous every-day-carry knife, the Cold Steel Voyager Lg. Clip Point Plain Edge Knife (shown in the submitted pictures). The texture of the G10 is perfect - rough enough to give a good grip, but not so rough that it will fray your pants. I wear cargo shorts most days of the week, and, while this stays firmly in place, it can be removed or stored with ease. Thicker pants (jeans) may make it less easy to remove.Deployment:Buttery. Smooth. This opens up so smoothly that it's unreal. All of the linerlocks and lockbacks I've used have nothing on this. The large hole in the blade makes it very easy to open, even with gloved hands. Due to the lack of a thumbstud, thumb-flicking this open takes some practice. It can be wrist-flicked fairly well, and, if you hold down the lock mechanism, it can require almost no effort whatsoever.Sidenote: Shortly after getting it, I put a ziptie through the hole to give it a DIY Emerson Wave, which works astoundingly well with this knife. The handle sticks out about an inch above the pocket because of the clip placement, and that allows you to get a very good grip on the knife before pulling it out - while leaving your fingers entirely clear of the path of the blade. I went with a larger size zip tie that also serves as a surrogate thumb stud, allowing me to open the knife without touching the blade whether I wave it out or not.Appearance:It's a very plain knife. While the wide leaf-shaped brushed blade is certainly impressive, it's not going to win any beauty contests. Function over form. I'm cool with that.Durability:I haven't used this knife for long, so I can't say much about the edge retention or the lock's long-term durability. I can say that it feels extremely sturdy, locks up with no blade play, the blade is evenly ground and is almost exactly as thick as the blade on my aforementioned Voyager. (Research shows the Manix2 XL to be 0.5mm thinner. Not visually noticeable.)HOWEVERThe tip and edge are crazy thin, thus this is not a beater knife. Hacking down trees and prying are entirely outside the workload of this knife. From everything I've read, S30v is an extremely durable and corrosion-resistant metal. It is not, though, indestructible. This will cut, slice, and serve as a self-defense tool, but using this to hack and chop will almost surely leave you with a broken blade.Overall, this knife seems to be designed perfectly for everyday carry. It will work beautifully for all of the cutting tasks one typically encounters in a day, at work or otherwise. Trim fingernails, prepare food, open boxes, cut straps, impress knife nerds (like myself)... All with little worry about rust or rapid dullness. If you can afford to drop the cash on this, or even if you can't (like me), you won't regret it.
