Product Description
The Manix 2 XL
Crafted for Life
The Manix 2 XL is an oversized version of the Manix 2 with a blade that is just under four-inches. The blade is locked open using Spyderco's patented Ball Bearing Lock. When opened, the ball bearing moves forward onto the blade's ramp where it is wedged, locking the blade safely open. The blade is CPM S30V, ground full-flat and features jimping above the oversized 14mm Spyderco Round Hole. The liners inside the G-10 handle extend beyond the scales, creating a scalloped pattern around the handle's perimeter for additional grip. This feature keeps the knife from slipping out in the hand and works well with gloves. The liners serve a double purpose by adding rigidity and lightweight strength to the handle. A three-screw clip can be positioned ambidextrously, tip-up for comfort and pocket carry. The knife also has a large lanyard pipe to protect various types of cords or thongs.

It carries light thanks to milled-out liners, but is still heavy enough to assist with cutting, especially tough/thick materials like ropes, drywall, heavy-duty cardboard, wood, etc. Slim blade makes it an amazing cutting performer, yet it's strong and durable due to blade width. The tip is much stronger than it looks, in part thanks to S30V—you never have to fear for it breaking, as long as you don't abuse it.
The handle is one of the most comfortable and ergonomic I've ever seen—it fuses with the hand and "wraps" around it, from my experience far beyond the ergos of PM/Millie. Variety of grips is unmatched thanks to handle shape: You can grab with the curled handle butt between the little and ring finger for tasks like delimbing smaller branches or chopping foliage. You can also come out with your thumb far onto the blade spine with solid purchase of your index on the 50/50 choil for very controlled precision work with the tip. It's also very comfortable and secure in reverse grip. Extra handle length is always there and it lends to added control in any grip.
The metal spacer housing the ball bearing lock closes a section of the handle adjacent to the blade, providing ample support for the thumb, while the open construction through the rest of the handle makes washing and cleaning (and drying) the knife a breeze. It goes from dirty and loaded with drywall/soil to perfectly clean and looking new out-the-box in less than two minutes.
The lock itself can be a bit stiff and takes some time to get used to and break in, but it's far from an issue. Lock strength is some of the best, lending to hard use with peace of mind, knowing it will never disengage on its own like a liner could while you're putting the knife through paces.
The fit, finish and tolerances are extremely precise and symmetrical, while the overall build is very solid and tight, as usually delivered by Spyderco. As noted by another reviewer, the slim profile and clean design give the knife a sleek and classy look. This is hands-down one of Spyderco's very best (and often underrated) designs, and where it truly shines is performance and reliability in hard use.
Manix 2 xl is probably the biggest, non joke, folder I've ever owned. It's really a xl!
It was stiff as heck out of the box which was disappointing. I messed with it for awhile and decided it made need some cleaning up to get better action. I disassembled it and actually am impressed with the quality. There are two things that mede the knife stiff. The thrust bearings/bushings were fine, no burrs. The pivot was just too tight, which by design is not supposed to happen but I'm guessing it's machined to allow for a little adjustment to compensate for wear. The second part of the equation was the caged bearing lock. It's running against freshly machined steel which was not overly polished. So I used a felt disk and some Flitz on my dremmel to polish the tang surface. Completely cleaned the parts and added a little oil. This smoothed out the action a ton. It will flick with the middle finger but not every time. Given a couple of weeks I know this will break in enough and will flick easily.
Fit and finish is good, not fantastic but good. No flaws were found but the metal parts could have easily been touched up on a buffing weel to make for excellent finishing. The fit is fantastic. Very tightly put together and tolerances are very good. No blade movement even after loosening the pivot screws a bit. Locks up tight and positively.
The texture on the g-10 is probably the best I've felt. It's like a fine emory board. Grippy but not too grippy. It is perfect IMO.
The ball bearing lock is a cool design. Simple and effective. Unfortunately, it is uncomfortable to actuate and pretty difficult to manage single handedly. I've read and seen videos that seem to agree that it gets easier as it breaks in but honestly, springs don't "break in". If they got softer over a short amount of time the spring would be useless. So I'm going to give it a few weeks before I start hunting softer springs. It is very stiff but it also holds the blade inside the handle better than any detent ball. I can not flick this out just using gravity and a brisk flip.
The edge was sharp. It also was unevenly ground. It was a better grind than on my ZT and appears to be even until I started honing the edge. One side was about a 17° while the other side was about a 22°. I tried to get them both to 20°. It wasn't necessary for me to re-sharpen it, it was quite sharp out of the box but rather something I wanted to do.
The size of the knife and weight are very manageable however the closed width, from top of the blade to spine of the hand when folded, it's simply too wide. It's fine if you're not digging around for keys in that pocket but if you're using the pocket for anything else, it will be an agrivation.
The pocket clip is a little tight. This will wear with time so I don't see it being an issue. It will not conceal well, about an inch is exposed above the clip.
The ergonomics of this knife are fantastic. Actually one of the most comfortable knives I own. The handle is big enough to accommodate the biggest hands yet fits my medium hands like it was built just for me. The jimping at the blade is perfection, the forward choil works flawlessly. It is absolutely comfortable. Big kudos to spyderco on this one.
This is my first spyderco and I'm excited to buy some more. The initial work I did on this knife was not necessary, I just like tinkering and although it did help, I just basically accelerated the break in period.
The manix2 xl would be an excellent camp knife, edc if you've got a free pocket and absolutely zombie busting approved!
