I bought this and a Tenacious at the same time and they are my first spyderco knives (I'm a Kershaw/Zero Tolerance guy). I love them. Well built considering their low price point and Chinese origins. The attention to detail is there even if others would disagree. No, this knife is not of the same quality as my $120+ ZT knives nor do I expect them to be...but for the VALUE you are getting from this blade its hard to argue with it.
The deployment is fast! The big blade creates a lot of inertia which cause it to fly out of the handle when you want yet has enough detent when closed to keep it from coming open in your pocket. The bushings allow for slick, smooth operation of the blade. The spydie hole is great. Its great for lefties and righties, spydie drops, and I did the zip tie mod and it waves as well as my Spartan and Rajah II.
Tip up, tip down, left hand, right hand carry. Good job Spyderco. Blade steel is great for holding a razor sharp edge. Full Flat GROUND! Came hair popping sharp out of the box! I took 3 sheets of paper to it as soon as I got it and was not disappointed. *WARNING* If you are not careful and mindful of how you close this blade it will slice you! The blade goes all the wave down to the handle and acts like a guillotine on your finger if you aren't careful.
Blade steel, however, WILL rust on you! I like in south Mississippi and I use gun lubricating oil on my high carbon content blades. Its cheap, easy to use and it works.
G-10 is grippy but not as grippy as I'd like. Its no deal breaker and in all honestly some might like it better because it won't tear up your pockets...as much. The clip is as tight as my Kershaw clips which means its an absolute bear to get under that thing. But, it holds the knife in very tight. The silver finish is lame on the clip but that is nothing steel wool and black paint won't cure.
Lock up is 98% tight. I'm a lock up snob. I HATE HATE HATE blade play. The knife loses 2% because when you pay $50 (give or take a few) for a blade you usually can't have your cake and eat it too. The blade is fast at the expense of a wee bit of blade play. If you tighten it up (which I tried) you will lose a large amount of that speed. HOWEVER, the said "blade play" is so minor and so hard to induce that its almost insignificant. When I test for blade play I go all the way to the tip and hold as low as possible on the handle. This is a better test for blade play, because I have so much more leverage, than how most other people do it. Most others will test for it their way and say "There is none." Your mileage may vary.
JImping on liner and on thumb ramp. Good job spyderco.
What more can I say? Buy it! Now! Don't wait. I paid for it when it was $55 (as of this review it says $50) because like the Tenacious it WILL sell out and be gone for a few months and hard to find. Get it you won't regret it unless you're very different from me and say its too big because I personally consider the tenacious "small."

Both of these knives are big. The Resilience is really big, maybe a bit too big for me because I couldn't deploy the blade in one single fluid motion, it has been a 2-step process where I get it half open, adjust my grip slightly, then lock it open. This might just be my and the size / geometry of my hand/thumb. The JYD has the flipper which is used a flick of you wrist. The blade is deployed quickly, smoothly, and with an authoritative and satisfying "chock" sound. Awesome. Having no thumb-stud / thumb-hole was weird at first, but after a couple of days, I don't miss them, especially with how well the flipper does its job. You get a sense of the craftsmanship and engineering when you feel the action of opening either of these. From a utilitarian / practical point of view, I'd give the advantage to Spyderco. I say this because with the JYD rapid deployment, it is possible the the JYD will fly out of your hand when locking open due to the blades inertia. From a coolness / WOW! / awesomeness point of view, the JYD wins hands down.
The liner locks on both of these is very similar and work flawlessly. Both engage and hold the blade open tightly and securely The release is very easy use.
Edge retention on my Resilience has been excellent. As with my other Spyderco (Tenacious), I am amazed at how long and how well the things hold an edge. I use my knives frequently every day, but I never abuse them or do a task for which it wasn't designed for except using the spine as a beer bottle opener (knife closed). Holds up better than my Buck Sirus. The Spyderco's also sharpened up easily. The Resilience and Tenacious came out of their boxes crazy sharp. I've been using the Resilience as my EDC for about a year. I have only had the JYD for a week, so I can't comment on edge retention or sharpening. Out of the box, it was not a sharp as I expected. Don't get me wrong, it was sharp, but it didn't feel honed to perfection. The composite blade is seriously impressive in it appearance and I imagine that it will serve its role with distinction.
Blade Design / appearance: The JYD composite blade with its wave interface is very cool looking, but that's not what I'm talking about here. I like the Resiliences blade shape. The arc of the edge and overall shape is pretty much perfect in my opinion. This goes for the Tenacious as well. The JYD blade is going to take some getting used to. To be frank, it's fugly! However, form follows function, and it does have a nice blade arch. I think its fugliness is part of its appeal and I'm alright with that. There is one thing I really don't like in some knives is when the blade has a concave shape, usually where the blade approaches the handle. Hate that! Makes sharpening on a flat-stone impossible. Neither of these knives have that problem. But I digress...
Clips: I like the option that the Spyderco clip can be positioned wherever you like. This is not an option on the JYD. If the JYD didn't come as tip-down-carry, I wouldn't have bought it. I heard a lot of grumbling about the JYD's clip design and appearance; but I have no problem with its appearance or its functionality. Again, it's only been with me for a week, but I don't predict any problems.
Feel: Both knives have a very similar feel, The Resilience handle is slightly longer which was noticable when it was in my pocket sometimes like when I was driving, it would dig into my thigh, but I don't notice a difference in using them. The JYD may be a bit heavier, but my perception of weight has never been too good. The handle material is identical (G-10). Feels very secure in my hand.
Overall: Either of these knives are fantastic. With its heftier price tag, the JYD trumps the Resilience just like a Mercedes trumps a Toyota. But that doesn't diminish what you get with the Resilience; It's a fantastic piece. To be honest with you, there was no need or reason for me to buy the JYD other than it's WOW factor. The Resilience was serving my needs perfectly. But hey, I've got issues and I like getting a new knife even though I have a guilty feeling when I see my Spyderco left on the dresser every day.
